Nature's Image Photography Workshops and Tours

Photography Essentials

Getting a good camera is just step one. Step two: learn how to use it!

Learning photography shouldn’t be a technical nightmare – it should be inspiring and fun. My two-day Photography Essentials Workshop in Maleny takes a step-by-step, plain English approach and is the ideal introduction to the world of creative photography.

DSLR and Mirrorless cameras are welcome, and I am familiar with all the major brands: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Fujifilm, Panasonic and more.

The skills you learn at Photography Essentials will help you with almost any kind of photography. Which of the following interest you?
* Landscapes
* Wildlife
* All things ‘nature’
* Portraits
* Action
* Travel

Photography Essentials is perfect for beginners, and also for people who have been teaching themselves for a while and now need someone to help ‘put the pieces together.’ We start with the absolute basics and work our way up from there. By the end of day one you WILL understand all the settings that matter. Along with Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO you will also learn about Focus, White Balance, lenses and more. Great photography is not just about camera settings: on day two we get creative with a detailed look at light and composition. See how to turn photo opportunities into works of art.

Matching theory with practice. Most workshops just take you somewhere pretty and give you a few pointers. At Photography Essentials the first half of each day is indoors, explaining all the theory you need to know (in plain English and with plenty of photos to illustrate). So when we go outside to practice, you don’t just know which button to press: you know what each button is for.

Here’s what you get with your booking:
* Two days of expert tuition with theory and practice sessions on both days
* A copy of Andrew’s 100 page e-book ‘DSLR Photography In Plain English’
* Membership of an exclusive online group, where past students share photos and feedback to keep learning – long after the workshop is over.

The workshops are held in picturesque Maleny, just a short drive from the Sunshine Coast and a popular weekend destination with visitors from Brisbane and beyond. If you need to organise a place to stay, CLICK HERE to see the accommodation guide from Hinterland Tourism.

Many people know how to take photos, but very few know how to teach. To learn photography you don’t just need someone who is good with a camera; you need someone who knows how to communicate in terms you can understand. I have been teaching for over a decade and have helped over 2,000 people – including some professionals – make a start in creative photography. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see testimonials from just a few of my past students.

Some workshops sell out weeks in advance, so BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment!

Itinerary

SATURDAY MORNING (INDOORS)
Start: 9:00am
STEP-BY-STEP: FROM THE BASICS TO REAL CAMERA SKILLS
This is photography for beginners, so we start at the beginning! Learn about the light-meter, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and how to put them all together in Manual mode. See how to control moving subjects and when to use a tripod. Understand depth of field and how to make it work for you. Finally we take a good look at wide-angle and telephoto lenses and how to use them to create photos with impact.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON (OUTDOORS)
End: About 4:30pm
OUR FIRST PRACTICAL SESSION
Everything we talked about in the morning, we put into practice in the afternoon. Switch your camera to MANUAL, and see how easy it is to control your light meter using aperture and shutter speed. You will learn to control moving subjects, manipulate depth of field, and discover how to get maximum impact from your lenses. These are all practical techniques used every day by professional photographers.
SUNDAY MORNING (INDOORS)
Start: 9:00am
DEVELOPING YOUR ARTIST’S EYE
Photography is not just about technology. Today we take a good look at lighting and composition, which are just as important as apertures and shutter speeds. In particular, you will learn the best way to approach Landscapes, Rainforests and Wildlife, and finally a quick look at the fascinating world of macro photography. If nature photography is not your ‘thing’ don’t worry – it is the skills that really matter. After the workshop you can apply them to any subject you choose.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON (OUTDOORS)
End: Up to you
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
We finish the weekend with a free-practice session at one of the beauty spots around Maleny. No set exercises here; you practice whatever you like at your own pace. Andrew will still be on hand for support and to answer any questions. A great way to end the weekend. Finishing time is up to you; stay until sunset or leave early to beat the traffic. The choice is yours.
AFTER YOUR WORKSHOP IS OVER
Ongoing Support
When the weekend is over you will receive a set of workshop exercises to practice at home, AND you will have a copy of Andrew's 100 page e-book to help you. Best of all you will be invited to join a growing family of past students who share their work in an online forum, and meet face to face for frequent practice outings - all for free!
WHERE WE MEET, WHAT TO BRING
FURTHER INFORMATION
The workshop is held at Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Both morning sessions begin at 9.00am. When your booking is complete you will receive a tax invoice with a link to download a PDF file containing all the information you need: where we meet, how to get there, what to bring...everything you need to know to arrive at the workshop on time and ready to go!
WHAT THE WORKSHOP IS NOT ABOUT
PHOTOGRAPHY, NOT PHOTOSHOP
It is important to understand that this workshop is about improving your photography using better camera technique, NOT about editing and fixing your photos on the computer. Editing has a valid role in modern photography but it is not the focus of this course.
Terms & Conditions:

Price for the Photography Essentials Workshop is $275.00 per person. There are no discounts for multiple bookings as we already offer exceptional value for money compared to other workshops. Your place at the workshop is reserved the moment you place your booking, but payment in advance is required to finalise the booking. Most people pay when they make their booking; you can choose to pay later if you wish. However your booking is not considered final until payment is made, and if a workshop is sold out and we have a waiting list, you will be asked to confirm the booking through payment, or the place may be offered to the next person on the list. There are no refunds for non-attendance, but if you genuinely cannot make it to the workshop on the date you have booked, you can transfer to another workshop at a later date. When your booking is complete (paid) you will receive information on where we meet, what to bring etc. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided but you are responsible for organising your own lunch. You can bring lunch (refrigerator available) or visit one of the many nearby cafes in Maleny. When your booking is complete you will receive a link to download a PDF with all the information you need.
