Nature's Image Photography Workshops and Tours

Photography Essentials Sunshine Coast

Photography Essentials is my most popular, longest-running workshop for beginners. Say goodbye to Auto forever, take control of your camera and discover a world of creative photography!

In the digital age, cameras seem to get more and more complicated, but there are so many features and functions you simply don’t need to know. Real camera technique is simple and fun to learn when you take it step by step and concentrate on the settings that matter – with an experienced teacher who explains things in terms you can understand. Over 2,000 enthusiasts (and some professionals) got their start at a Photography Essentials workshop.

WHERE AND WHEN? Workshops are held in Maleny, a short drive from the Sunshine Coast and a popular destination for visitors from Brisbane and beyond. It is a two-day course held on weekends (see dates below).

WHO IS IT FOR? Photography Essentials is perfect for absolute beginners – it’s OK if you know nothing! Also for people who have been teaching themselves and have some experience, but are ready for a bit of formal tuition.

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO I NEED? The course was designed for DSLR and Mirrorless DSLR cameras, and I am familiar with all major brands: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic etc. Non-DSLR cameras may be suitable but must have a Manual Exposure mode. If you are not sure about your camera, please contact me before making your booking.

* TWO FULL DAYS of tuition including a classroom theory session in the morning, followed by hands-on practice in the afternoon. The pace is relaxed with time for your questions, and extra one-on-one attention for those who need it.

* A DIGITAL COPY of my 100-page e-book DSLR Photography In Plain Enlgish.

* MEMBERSHIP of an exclusive online community where past students share feedback and tips, and meet socially at frequent photo-outings.

GIFT VOUCHERS ARE AVAILABLE. Contact Andrew Goodall by email (admin@naturesimage.com.au) or phone 0448 700 162.

Start: 9:00am
This is photography for beginners, so we start at the beginning! Learn about the light-meter, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and how to put them all together in Manual mode. See how to control moving subjects and when to use a tripod. Understand depth of field and how to make it work for you. Finally we take a good look at wide-angle and telephoto lenses and how to use them to create photos with impact.
End: About 4:30pm
Everything we talked about in the morning, we put into practice in the afternoon. Switch your camera to MANUAL, and see how easy it is to control your light meter using aperture and shutter speed. You will learn to control movement, manipulate depth of field, and discover how to get maximum impact from your lenses. You will finish the day confident that you are well on the way to 'mastering manual.'
Start: 9:00am
Photography is not just about technology. Today we take a good look at lighting and composition, which are just as important as apertures and shutter speeds. In particular, you will learn the best way to approach Landscapes, Rainforests and Wildlife, and finally a quick look at the fascinating world of macro photography. If nature photography is not your ‘thing’ don’t worry – it is the skills that really matter. After the workshop you can apply them to any subject you choose.
End: Up to you
We finish the weekend with a free-practice session at one of the beauty spots around Maleny. No set exercises here; you practice whatever you like at your own pace. Andrew will still be on hand for support and to answer any questions. A great way to end the weekend. Finishing time is up to you; stay until sunset or leave early to beat the traffic. The choice is yours.
Ongoing Support
When the weekend is over you will receive a set of workshop exercises to practice at home, AND you will have a copy of Andrew's 100 page e-book to help you. Best of all you will be invited to join a growing family of past students who share their work in an online forum, and meet face to face for frequent practice outings - all for free!
The workshop is held at Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Both morning sessions begin at 9.00am. When your booking is complete you will receive a tax invoice with a link to download a PDF file containing all the information you need: where we meet, how to get there, what to bring...everything you need to know to arrive at the workshop on time and ready to go!
Terms & Conditions:

Price for the Photography Essentials Workshop is $275.00 per person. There are no discounts for multiple bookings as we already offer exceptional value for money compared to other workshops. Your place at the workshop is reserved the moment you place your booking, but payment in advance is required to finalise the booking. Most people pay when they make their booking; you can choose to pay later if you wish. However your booking is not considered final until payment is made, and if a workshop is sold out and we have a waiting list, you will be asked to confirm the booking through payment, or the place may be offered to the next person on the list. There are no refunds for non-attendance, but if you genuinely cannot make it to the workshop on the date you have booked, you can transfer to another workshop at a later date. When your booking is complete (paid) you will receive information on where we meet, what to bring etc. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided but you are responsible for organising your own lunch. You can bring lunch (refrigerator available) or visit one of the many nearby cafes in Maleny. When your booking is complete you will receive a link to download a PDF with all the information you need.

  • You taught me how the soft light of dawn or the golden light of late afternoon can add a touch of magic to an image. You taught me the importance of taking control of what my camera is doing. You brought my fuzzy ideas about composition into clear focus. And you inspired me to take up my camera and shoot, to get up and have a go.
  • Andrew is a perfect presenter. Explains things clearly and at a level perfect for my comprehension.
  • Thanks for a great PRACTICAL workshop ! I have always been afraid of the big “M” on the camera – but not anymore!
  • I have been on many courses in my 75 yrs. I rank yours as one of the best . You have a great way of keeping up the interest in the class.
  • The weekend has given me more knowledge and confidence and renewed my enthusiasm… thanks again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and experience.
  • Your method and mode of teaching is hands on, practical and free of technical gobbldygook — EXACTLY what most of us would be photographers need.
  • Description & explanation of things was very good… very helpful. You are a great teacher.
  • Good fun and a good mix of classroom and outdoors.
  • This course gave me a better understanding of the technical side which has always been daunting to me.
  • Gave me a lot of good ideas. I have a greater understanding of my camera.
  • I must say I enjoyed your ‘easygoing’ style of teaching and openness.
  • I have more practice to do but am now excited about using my camera. Thank you for the inspirational workshop.
  • If there is one thing I can recommend to anyone interested in photography it is to DO THIS COURSE! I can never thank Andrew enough for sharing his knowledge and making it so easy.
